Train With Hazardous Materials Derails in Del.

No leaks reported after train carrying hazardous materials derails in Birdgeville

A train carrying cargo full of hazardous materials derailed near Bridgeville Wednesday morning causing some cars to overturn.

Police and transportation workers responded to the scene shortly after 9:45 a.m.

Delaware State Police are advising residents and businesses to evacuate the area near the derailed train cars, DelDOT said. However, there are no mandatory evacuations.

A DelDOT official said the derailment closed Wilson Farm Road to vehicle traffic between Cannon Road and Federalsburg Road. The road closure continued into the night as cranes arrived on the scene to try and upright the overturned tanker.

Five cars, including a propane tank, derailed in the accident. There are no reports of any injuries or leaking.

On-site emergency operations supervisor Joe Hoppel told NBC10 that it would take two cranes to upright the overturned tanker car. Once it is lifted they will need to examine the underside to ensure it wasn't breached.

Seven homes were evacuated and revers 911 would be used for further evacuations if needed, Hoppel said.
