Freight Train Derails in Center City

Crews were working Tuesday morning to get a derailed freight train back on track in Center City when one of the heavy cars fell over.

Grain that was inside the freight car came spilling out along the tracks that hug the Schuylkill River at 23rd and Race Streets.

Five cars derailed Monday night, possibly due to a switching problem, investigators said.

Crews worked for hours to upright the cars.

"I was very impressed with the way the crews used the two cranes to lift and position the cars," said Lisa Phillips, a photographer who lives in the area.

Phillips emailed us some pictutes she took from the roof of her building. One of the shots -- the last one in the series -- shows where the track is broken.

The CSX train was not carrying any hazardous materials, according to investigators.

The train was headed to North Carolina from Albany, New York.
