Toy Hand Grenade Leads to Massive Response on New Jersey Beach

Police in New Jersey say a toy hand grenade sparked a flood of emergency agencies responding to a Jersey shore beach.

Seaside Park Police spokesman Cpl. Steve Shadiack says they received a call about what appeared to be a grenade Sunday afternoon at a local beach. NJ.com reports officers immediately evacuated the area, shut down the beach and closed nearby streets.

Multiple agencies were called to the scene, including the prosecutor's office's arson unit, the Ocean County Sheriff's Department's K-9 unit and the New Jersey State Police bomb squad.

Shadiack says the device was revealed to be a toy upon closer inspection, and it was taken by police for destruction.

Shadiack says officials are unsure if the toy grenade was intentionally placed or just washed ashore.
