A Penn State administrator charged with failing to report an allegation of child sex abuse involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky has been diagnosed with a recurrence of lung cancer.
Athletic Director Tim Curley's wife says doctors are monitoring his condition after the illness first diagnosed in June 2010 flared up again.
Melinda Curley said in a statement Wednesday:
"This is a personal and private matter that has affected our family since June 2010. A malignant cancerous tumor was discovered and one-half of Tim's lung was removed. He has not required chemotherapy or radiation, however, doctors continue to monitor his condition. During this difficult time, Tim did not want his health to be a distraction and has been dealing with this privately. We are thankful for all the love and support he has received from family and friends and continue to hope for a full recovery."
Tim Curley's lawyer Caroline Roberto also issued a statement:
"Mr. Curley did not want his personal health issues to overshadow or minimize the serious legal issues at hand. However, despite his illness, Mr. Curley has remained totally focused on doing whatever is necessary to demonstrate that he is not guilty of the crimes with which he has been charged."
Curley is on administrative leave. He is also charged with perjury and is awaiting trial. Roberto says Curley remains focused on proving he's not guilty of the charges.
