Thousands March in Center City in Honor of MLK, Social Justice

Thousands of people marched in Center City to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The “Reclaim MLK” march began Monday around 2 p.m. at 440 North Broad Street. Around 2,000 people marched to Independence Mall where a rally took place.

In addition to honoring the late civil rights leader, the participants also called for an end to the use of the “stop and frisk” policy, an independent police review board that is “fully empowered and funded,” a $15 per hour minimum wage, the right to form unions and finally, a “fully funded, democratically controlled,” local school system.

"It's imperative that I come out and do something because my ancestors worked really hard to get equal opportunities," said Charlotte Roberts, a Drexel University student who participated in the march.

The march also included parents and their children.

"It makes me feel like a better person because I get to help out my community," said Ahmir Rodwell, who attended the rally with his sister and father. "We could be a better community, more peaceful and fight for our rights."
