Thieves Target Sewer Storm Covers: Cops

Police say 12 to 16 of the storm covers were stolen in the past 2 weeks

Police are on the hunt for thieves who they say are targeting storm sewer lids in an Abington Township neighborhood.

In the past two weeks 12 to 16 storm sewer lids have been stolen from Willow Grove, according to Police.

"It would have to be a vehicle involved because you would not carry around a number of 50 pound plates if you're just on foot," said Abington Police Deputy Chief John Livingood.

The Township says the uncovered sewer drain poses a significant danger.

"Kids coming by from school and everything, they can get hurt," said Lauren Dinkins of Willow Grove. "But you think people think about that? No."

The lids cost around $200 to replace, but township officials believe the thieves would only get about $50 if they are resold for scrap metal.

"The problem is we're having a hard time, we can't find anybody that currently makes that type of lid," said Ed Micciolo of Public Works.

Investigators are warning workers at local scrap metal yards to be on the look out for the storm sewer grates and to not buy them. They are also urging residents to call police if they notice any activity around storm sewers in their area.
