The Heat is On

For those in eager anticipation of warm, summer weather, be careful what you wish for.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat advisory for the Philadelphia area on Monday.

The advisory will be effective from noon until 9 p.m.

While Monday’s expected temperatures won’t be extreme enough to trigger a heat warning, Philadelphians are still urged to take precaution.

Older people, those with chronic medical conditions, those who take regular medication, pregnant women, small children and anyone engaged in strenuous physical activity are most at risk in extreme heat.

“Those at risk in the heat shouldn’t wait for a warning,” said Health Commissioner Donald F. Schwarz.

“They should use common sense and take precautions to avoid over-exertion whenever it is hot.”

Here are a few tips to handle the heat:
· Avoid working or playing in the hot sun or hot areas
· Use air conditioners and fans
· Open windows to release trapped air
· Wear lightweight clothing
· Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids
· Shower or bathe in water that is near skin temperature
· Don’t leave older people, children or pets alone in cars

Here are the early warning signs of heat stress:
· Decreased energy
· Slight loss of appetite
· Nausea
· Faintness
· Light-headedness

Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should move to a cool area, drink water and remove excess clothing.

Here are the serious signs of heat stress:
· Unconsciousness
· Rapid heartbeat
· Throbbing headache
· Dry skin
· Chest pain
· Mental Confusion
· Vomiting
· Difficulty breathing
· Irritability
· Diarrhea
· Muscle Cramps
· Staggering

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. While waiting for medical attention, have a friend move you to a cool area, remove excess clothing, spray you with water and fan you. In an extreme emergency, call 911.

Stay cool and be safe Philadelphians. You got through the bitter cold, now its time to beat the heat.
