Temple Could Join Big East In All Sports: Report

A new report in The New York Times says the Owls are closer to joining the Big East conference

The New York Times is reporting that Temple University is in discussions with the Big East Conference to become a member in all sports, as early as the 2013 school year.

Temple, who currently belongs to the Mid-American Conference in football and the Atlantic 10 in other sports, would fill the void left when West Virginia University announced last week they’d be leaving to join the Big 12. That defection follows those of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the Atlantic Coast Conference, which was announced last September.

From the report: “Within the next month, Temple will also have to inform the new conference formed by the merger of the Mountain West and Conference USA of its intentions. Temple has been asked to join that league."

Temple was kicked out of the Big East in 2004 after years of struggling at the bottom of the conference. If the Temple addition becomes official, that would bring the total number of Big East programs to 13 in football and 18 in basketball.
