Teens Locked in Police Van Get $360K

Three teenagers who were left overnight locked in a police van will split $360,000 under a settlement reached with a North Jersey town.

They alleged they spent about 15 hours in the van without food, water, bathrooms and warm clothing after Fort Lee police broke up a house party in March 2011. The teens claimed police intentionally inflicted emotional distress, were negligent and showed racial bias. Two of the teens are of Korean descent.

Fort Lee's attorney tells The Record newspaper none of the parties named in the lawsuit admit any guilt or liability under the settlement.

The youths were rescued when a passer-by saw them and called police.

Borough officials disciplined several officers, saying they failed to follow procedures.
