Teenager Carjacks Off-Duty NJ Cop: Officials

An off-duty Newark police officer was carjacked by a teenager on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The 17-year-old was arrested and charged with carjacking, conspiracy and receiving stolen property, according to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose.

The officer was getting out of her GMC Acadia on Hawthorn Avenue when the teen got inside, Ambrose said. A passenger was still in the backseat but got out unharmed.

The officer fired her gun and the teen sped off, Ambrose said.

He was found hours later with two other teens in a different stolen car, Ambrose said. The trio crashed into a parked car, then fled on foot but officers caught them.
