A Schwenksville teenager who was behind the wheel in a fatal accident in suburban Philadelphia over the weekend was one of the first babies to be carried in the womb by his grandmother.
Dr. Ida Campagna says 17-year-old Matthew Meslowski's grandmother, who was postmenopausal at the time, gave birth to him in 1992 in Buffalo. Meslowski was killed in a head-on collision in Lower Frederick, Pa. at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Campagna told The Buffalo News on Monday that Meslowski made international headlines when he was born because his grandmother, Geraldine, was the oldest woman to be a surrogate at the time. She was 53 when Meslowski was born.
βWe made world news when this kid was born,β she said. βIt was a huge thing when it happened 17 years ago. She was the oldest woman in the world to be a surrogate. It had never been done before. And that baby was birthed in little old Buffalo.β
Matthew and his parents moved to Pennsylvania soon after his birth.
Meslowski lost control of a Hyundai Tiburon he was driving, crossed the center line of the road and crashed head-on into an oncoming BMW driven by a 34-year-old man from Souderton, Pa.
A passenger in the other car, 32-year-old Jodie Morales of Souderton, died at the scene. Two other people were injured.
