Teen Critically Injured in Berks County Shooting

A 13-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting in Berks County Friday evening.

The victim and two of his friends were in the victim's bedroom when a small black hatchback car pulled into the driveway around 7 p.m. A 19-year-old man identified as Matthew Hale approached an open window, punched in the screen and yelled obscenities to the people inside, police said.

Two people ran out of the bedroom but the victim stayed inside. They heard gunshots and the victim screaming while Hale walked back to the car, which was being driven by a woman, police said.

The Reading Eagle reported that dispatchers said the teenager was shot in the collarbone with a 9 mm pistol. The teenager was reportedly conscious but was experiencing what was called "significant bleeding'' and having respiratory difficulties.

The victim was transported to a local hospital.

Hale is being charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license and possessing an instrument of crime.
