Teen Pleads Guilty to Gunfight That Left Trooper Shot, Could Serve 146 Years

A teenager charged with shooting a state trooper after a chaotic car chase in downtown Philadelphia has pleaded guilty.

Philly.com reports 18-year-old Giovanny Cotto has pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder and causing a catastrophe, among other charges.

Judge Roxanne Covington told Cotto he could face a maximum of 146 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Cotto was stopped in November 2015 for an expired registration. Before his car was towed, Cotto jumped in and sped off. The chase ended when his car crashed into a school bus.

Cotto then drew a pistol and fired at Trooper Patrick Casey, who was struck in the shoulder. Cotto was later arrested after fleeing police.

Cotto's lawyer has asked for an investigation into his history and a mental health evaluation.
