Philadelphia is recognized among the nation’s top citizen-engaged communities

Philadelphia officials are proud of their winning ways when it comes to connecting with the community.

The Public Technology Institute announced on Wednesday the city and county governments recognized as Citizen-Engaged Communities for 2011-2013.

The recognition specifically lauds the city for its 311 Call Center, city services support that is offered in a number of different languages reflecting the makeup of the city and for its utilization of social media, like Facebook and Twitter.

“Philadelphians are definitely engaged, and I’d like to thank PTI for recognizing our citizens,” said Mayor Michael Nutter in a statement released on Wednesday. ”Over the past four years, we have created multiple new avenues for Philadelphians to report complaints, suggest solutions and to volunteer their time to make Philadelphia safer, cleaner and healthier.”

PTI created the program to recognize best practices by communities across the nation.

Philadelphia is among six major cities (population from 150,001 to 300,000) designated for its citizen engagement, along with Boston, Denver, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Mo., and Minneapolis.

The cities were also applauded for keeping an eye on budget limitations while encouraging local residents to take an active role in the community.
