Cup of Tea Burns Toddler

A spilled cup of hot tea left a toddler hospitalized overnight.

Police say a Lakewood, N.J. toddler was in stable condition after he was burned by a spilled cup of hot tea.

The 15-month-old was flown to the Saint Barnabas burn center in Livingston Tuesday with second-degree burns to his face, neck and chest.

Lakewood Police spokesman Det. Sgt. Greg Staffordsmith tells the Asbury Park Press it appears the boy spilled the tea on himself from a cup that was momentarily left unattended on a kitchen counter inside a Park Avenue home.

The boy suffered burns on 18 percent of his body, Staffordsmith told the paper.

The incident remains under investigation.

Serious burns are fairly common in the United States. Around 450,000 Americans are estimated to require medical treatment for burns each year, according to the American Burn Association.
