Philly Hosts Royals

Philadelphia is getting a visit from Sweden's royal family.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia are scheduled to stop Friday in the city as part of a four-day trip to the U.S.

The royals are marking the 375th anniversary of the founding of the colony of New Sweden. The yellow and blue of Philadelphia's city flag remain an ode to the city's Swedish past.

The King and Queen will first stop by at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philly Saturday morning. They will then travel to Mother’s Arc in Chester before heading to Wilmington for several events in the afternoon and night.

The King and Queen will travel on the Kalmar Nyckel, a replica of the original vessel that brought the first Swedish and Finnish settlers to the Delaware Valley. The colony they settled in would ultimately become the city of Wilmington, Del.

In 1638, Swedish and Finnish colonists arrived by boat in present-day Wilmington -- about 25 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

The royals' tour of Philadelphia will include Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the American Swedish Historical Museum.

On Saturday, the royals will be joined by the speaker of Finland's parliament for events in suburban Philadelphia and Delaware.

The king and queen visited New York and Washington earlier this week.
