Suspicious Package Causes Evacuations at Delaware Library

Authorities evacuated library-goers in a Delaware community Saturday afternoon while they investigated reports of a suspicious package.

A passerby noticed a package with what appeared to be a timer located near a bike outside the Bear Library at 101 Governors Place around 12:30 p.m., New Castle County Police said.

Library staff were immediately notified and evacuated the building as authorities rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, New Castle County Police officers secured the area and they, along with fire crews and the Delaware Department of Transportation, closed nearby roads.

Authorities used a specialized robot to examine the suspicious package and determine it was not an explosive device, police said.

Investigators said the package contained a device used to capture distances covered on the bike. The owner of the bike and item was located.

No charges will be filed.
