Sunoco Fined for Stinking Up S. Philly

You can thank Sunoco for the foul odor over South Philadelphia overnight and early Thursday morning.

The stinky air drifted into the neighborhood around the refinery at Marvin and Biggler Streets and even made it across the river into New Jersey.

"I guess I was about 13 blocks from there and I could smell it," said Ron Drury. "I woke up the neighbor upstairs too, she said she was hiding in the bathroom."

Sunoco was washing out equipment and some oil got onto the roof of one of their storage tanks, spokesman Thomas Golembeski said.

That smell that came up off that oil is what assaulted the senses.

It's unpleasant but not unhealthy, according to Golembeski.

The company is monitoring the air inside and outside the refinery and said that rotten egg-like smell should be gone by Thursday evening.

The city fined the refinery for breaking its foul odor ordinance. They will have to pay a fine of at least $300.
