Suit Says City Workers Took Bribes for After-Hours Swims

Suitsays teen almost drowned after paying pool worker $2 to swim after hours

A mother and her teenage son are suing the city for allegedly accepting money to allow a group of kids to swim after hours, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Khalik Miller, 16, almost drowned after he allegedly paid a city recreation department worker $2 to swim after hours at the Awbury Recreation Center in East Germantown, reports the Daily News.

On July 15, 2008, about 30 kids were swimming without any lifeguards or supervision, according to the lawsuit.

Millerโ€™s lawyer, I. Michael Luber, told the Daily News that the 16-year-old was knocked unconscious after when he dove into the pool and hit his head.

When the kids were told playtime was over and instructed to leave, they told a worker that Miller was still in the pool.

They ran back to the pool where they found Miller motionless. Two girls dove in and pulled Miller out of the pool.

While the girls began CPR, the suit claimed that the employee did nothing, according to the Daily News. Luber told the paper it was not clear who called 9-1-1.

Miller was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center and later treated for severe lung damage at St. Christopherโ€™s Hospital for Children.
