The Philadelphia School District will release its 2013 budget on Tuesday morning, as well as a five-year financial plan that could include school closings.

The district faces a $218 million deficit for the 2013 school year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports 40 under-utilized and low performing schools could be closed in September 2013. Six more schools would be closed each year through 2017, according to the Inquirer.

Many of the students from those schools would be transfered to charter schools.

The details of the spending plan and proposed school closures are expected to be released at a press conference Tuesday morning.
