Authorities in southern New Jersey say an emergency medical services chief was impaired when he drove an EMS vehicle to a crime scene.
Gloucester Township police say Thomas Eden Sr. of Erial was arrested Thursday night after officers at the scene noticed that he appeared to be intoxicated.
At the time, officials were working to end a standoff with a man who had barricaded himself inside a home and allegedly tried to set it on fire.
Deputy Police Chief David Harkins says Eden _ the chief of the township's EMS Alliance _ was charged with driving while intoxicated and with use or being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.
A telephone message left at Eden's home early Saturday afternoon was not immediately returned. Officials say he has temporarily been replaced as the alliance's chief.
