Police Bust South Jersey Men with Heroin, Gun

Two South Jersey men were being held on high cash bails after police said officers watched the men conduct a drug sale and found drugs one one man and drugs and a gun on the other.

Toms River Police said they received a tip call on Sept. 30 about possible drug activity outside a business on Route 37 East near Brookside Drive. When investigators set up surveillance, police said, they saw Ansel Applewhite, 23, of Toms River, conduct a narcotics transaction outside. They stopped the man and discovered he had 762 folds of heroin, eight Xanax pills and $2,248 cash, police said.

Police continued to investigate and found an "associate" of Applewhite, identified as 20-year-old Eugene Ayala Jr. of Beachwood, inside a business. On Ayala, officers found 20 folds of heroin and a loaded .38-caliber handgun, police said.

Both men were taken into custody at the scene. Applewhite's bail was set at $150,000 full cash and Ayala's at $100,000 full cash, authorities said.
