‘I'm Not Going to Jail for This': Body Cam Video Shows Arrest of NJ Doctor

Dr. James Kauffman's wife, April, was killed in 2012. He has denied any involvement in her death

A judge ordered a New Jersey doctor who brandished a handgun as police surrounded his Egg Harbor Township office last week held until his trial.

Body camera footage of the standoff with police and Dr. James Kauffman, the physician husband of a slain New Jersey Radio host, shows Kauffman yelling, "I'm not going to jail for this!"

The video was played Monday during a hearing to determine if Kauffman should remain behind bars on weapons charges unrelated to his wife's death. A judge ruled that Kauffman was a flight risk and will remain in custody until his trial.

On June 13, Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office investigators along with FBI agents and Egg Harbor Township Police converged on Kauffman’s medical office and Linwood home to investigate "suspected criminal activity."

As officers executed a search warrant at his medical office, Kauffman brandished a 9mm handgun, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said. A hostage negotiator convinced the endocrinologist to surrender. He was arrested and taken for a psychological examination.[[428161853, C]]

Kauffman's attorney vowed to appeal the judge's ruling. He noted during the hearing that Kauffman has been under an "investigative microscope" for the past five years since April Kauffman's death and hasn't fled.

Prosecutors said the search warrant was not related to the May 2012 murder of his wife, April Kauffman.

"It was an unrelated matter that led us (to his office)," Tyner said.

April Kauffman was killed in her Linwood home in May 2012. She was a local businesswoman who hosted weekly talk shows and advocated for military veterans. She had received a governor's award for outstanding community service a few days before her death.

James Kauffman has denied any involvement in her death.

The prosecutor has 90 days to indict Kauffman on the gun charges, which include unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of hollow point bullets, and obstruction of the administration of law, prosecutors said.
