Some Pa. Boroughs Face Vacant Seats, Political Apathy

It's the opposite of a political slugfest: Some western Pennsylvania boroughs will have vacant seats next year, because no one ran for the position.

The Daily American reports that about 17 of Somerset County's 25 boroughs are likely to have at least one vacant council seat starting Jan. 1.

Shelley Houk, the research director for the Pennsylvania Association of Boroughs, says it's a problem around the state.

Houk says the role of officials has become more complex, with more hurdles to jump over, and more meetings. Some people just can't give the time needed for the job.

Houk says one option is reducing the size of a borough council, or asking for court-appointed officials.
