New Jersey's Department of Transportation has sent out the call for snowplow operators.
The state is seeking truckers with commercial driver's licenses who can operate six- to eight-ton dump trucks.
DOT commissioner James Simpson tells The Star-Ledger of Newark that the agency will teach drivers how to plow snow. The on-call jobs pay about $43 per hour.
"We’re worried about having a big event and having drivers working for days without sleep -- that could cause an accident," Simpson told the Star-Ledger. "So we said, ‘You know what we need to do? We need to get as many extra people that we can."
The effort is aimed at augmenting NJDOT's current road force which is still involved in finishing the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy.
It will also help if there's a storm like the December 2010 blizzard that dumped up to 32 inches of snow on New Jersey and left cars and trucks stranded on major roads overnight.
