Local Students Might Light Up Again

Smokers at 14 Pennsylvania colleges including West Chester and Kutztown, might get to light up once again.

If you didn't know, a smoking ban took affect in September which banned smoking in most public places indoor and out  across Pennsylvania.

The ban was passed by the State System of Higher Education.

But, last week the Pennsylvania Relations Board overturned the indoor smoking restrictions. And the outdoor ban may be next. Universities cannot ban faculty members and coaches from smoking outdoors unless their union agree to the restrictions, according to the Labor Board ruling.

The system plans to appeal to state Commonwealth Court, said a spokesperson Kenn Marshall.

"We believe the action we took was still appropriate in accordance with the law," said Marshall.

As of right now, the system officials have issued warnings only to people who smoke outside on campus.
