Skateboarders in Newark will soon have dedicated spaces in the city to practice their tricks.
The city council on Tuesday unanimously approved a $160,000 project to build skateboarding spots at Norma B. Handloff Park and Phillips Park. The areas would be about the size of tennis courts, and Councilman David Athey says they will have rails and ramps for skateboarders to ride on.
Police, residents and businesses have expressed support for the spots in hopes that they will cut down on incidents of skateboarders trespassing at shopping centers and plazas.
The city will pay for the project using $40,000 in capital funds, $40,000 from a private donor and an $80,000 grant.
Officials estimate Newark has 1,300 to 1,500 skateboarders, many between the ages of 10 and 15.
