Council Addresses Rec Center Safety Concerns

Philadelphia City Council members held a session Thursday to discuss recreation center safety. The city says there are plans to install more security cameras to keep residents safe

More than 150 people gathered Thursday at Philadelphia's City Hall to discuss a recent violent streak at city recreation centers.

Residents say they have safety concerns after a homicide, rape and several shootings have taken place at the facilities this summer.

Local youth leaders and city activists were able to express their concerns and the city informed residents of what they are doing to keep them safe.

"We will continue with the installation of security cameras at FJ Myers Recreation Center and 30 other recreation centers across the parks and recreation system," said Deputy Mayor Michael Diberardinis.

Public Safety Director Michael Resnick said uniformed officers are present at priority locations and there is a police presence during league games.

Input from this session will be passed along to all City Council members when they reconvene in September.
