Officials ID Swimmer Who Drowned at NJ Park

Authorities have identified the man who drowned while swimming at a northern New Jersey park.

Bergen County Police say 23-year-old Alfonso de la Cruz Teletor was a day laborer from Guatemala who most recently had lived in Palisades Park.

His body was found around 1 p.m. Sunday in Overpeck Creek, nearly a day after he was last seen. The creek is a tributary of the Hackensack River.

Authorities have said Teletor and two friends were in a wooded area of Overpeck County Park in Palisades Park when he decided to take a swim Saturday afternoon. He swam about halfway into creek before he became distressed and went under.

Swimming is prohibited in the creek, which in that stretch is about 100 yards wide.
