Man Not Guilty of Stabbing & Killing Girlfriend's Father in Delaware

Jury acquits man in Leipsic murder case

A Kent County man has been acquitted of murder in the stabbing death of his girlfriend's father.

A jury on Friday found 25-year-old Gerard Schweiger not guilty of first-degree murder. They also refused to convict him on lesser charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter or negligent homicide.

Schweiger was charged with killing 45-year-old Tony Mozick of Leipsic in January 2013. Mozick was the father of Jennifer Barnes, the mother of Schweiger's young child.

Schweiger's defense attorneys argued that Barnes, not Schweiger, killed her father.

Schweiger and Barnes both were accused of dumping the body into the Leipsic River.

Barnes was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and other charges.

The jury found Schweiger guilty on similar charges.
