A Philadelphia-area school district says it might not make payroll the rest of the year if the state won't give it an $18 million advance on subsidies it's supposed to get in June.
The Delaware County Daily Times reports the Chester Upland School District publicly asked Gov. Tom Corbett's office on Thursday to advance the district its basic and special education subsidies.
Superintendent Levi Wingard says refusal to advance the money could force schools to close. The district says it's been discussing the matter with the state Department of Education for months but no resolution was reached.
District officials cited debt and state funding cuts for the budget problems.
A Corbett spokeswoman tells the Daily Times the request is being reviewed.
