School Bus Hit-&-Run Victim Dies

A preliminary hearing for a Pittsburgh Public Schools bus driver facing hit-and-run charges has been postponed because the victim has died.

The Allegheny County district attorney says autopsy results on Alberta Slaczka will determine whether authorities file more charges against 71-year-old Ernest Brevard, of Wilkins Township.

The 67-year-old woman was hit May 1 while crossing the street near a parochial school in Forest Hills, where Brevard had just dropped off some students. She died at a Pittsburgh hospital on Wednesday.

Brevard has told county detectives that he didn't realize he hit the woman.

Brevard's attorney, Blaine Jones, says "Our heart goes out to the family."

Brevard was driving Pittsburgh students to the suburban school because the city's school district is responsible for busing its residents even if they attend private schools.
