Con Man Uses Craigslist to Target “Sandy” Victim

46-year-old Anthony White is charged with theft by deception.

Brick Township, New Jersey police arrested a Toms River man who they say preyed on a victim of "Hurricane Sandy."

46-year-old Anthony White is charged with theft by deception.

Police say he offered a rental home that wasn't his, to a woman looking for a place on Craigslist.

White, identified himself as "Mr. Dublin" when he met up with the victim and her 17-year-old daughter outside of a Staples store on Route 70, on December 7, according to police.

The woman signed a fake lease agreement, received a copy of it and handed White $2,250 in cash for a security deposit.

She was then handed a set of keys for the home on Dogwood Drive.

When the victim tried to get into the house, the keys did not work. She realized she had been the target of a scam.

Luckily, her teenaged daughter who was feeling uneasy about the transaction, had taken a picture of White on her cell phone.

Police say they were able to use that picture to find White and arrest him.
