SEPTA to Hike Fares, Upgrade Payment System

SEPTA will announce their fare proposal for 2014 later today.

SEPTA officials are expected to announce their fare proposal for 2014 later today.

The proposal includes a fare hike as well as a payment system upgrade.

The new payment system, dubbed the "smart" system will take three years to complete, according to SEPTA's Website. However, the system will be well worth the wait for riders.

The new fare collection system will offer payment choices that include cash and refillable cards and will incorporate smart phones and other devices.

SEPTA plans on educating its riders on the new system in the hopes of alleviating any confusion when launch time arrives.

No word yet on how much fares will increase next year.

SEPTA officials are expected to make the announcement at 1 p.m. today.
