Roxborough Basketball Star Gunned Down

Teen killed as he walked home from to the store: police

A Roxborough High School junior was gunned down Monday night in North Philadelphia around 10:30 as he walked home from the store, according to Philadelphia Police.

Authorities say that Rashawn "Shawnee" Anderson was shot in the head multiple times while walking in his apartment complex on the 3200 block of McMichael Terrace in the Abbottsford Homes complex in the Hunting Park section of the city.

Rashawn's father Shawn heard the gunshots and rushed outside.

"To hold a child in your arms -- not knowing if he's going to make it or not -- that's the last image that I seen of him," said the teary-eyed mourner.

Anderson was rushed to Temple Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 18-year-old basketball star is the second Roxborough High student to be murdered this year.

"This is a tragic loss," said Roxborough principal Stephen Brandt.

There was a moment of silence Tuesday night before his teammates took the court against South Philly High in his honor. He was the team's leading scorer.

Cops don't have a motive or suspect in the shooting.

Police said Anderson was known to them. But the teen had rebounded from past troubles, according those that knew him.

"He had overcome a lot of adversity and he really had his life moving in the right direction," said Brandt. "We were looking forward to Rashawn graduating this June and going on to college, whether to play basketball or just pursue athletics."
