Deadly Crash Closes Route 202 in Delaware for Hours

Car catches fire after slamming into tree near Widener Law School in New Castle County

A deadly fiery crash closed a busy Delaware road into the Monday morning rush.

A Mazda MZ3 crashed off U.S. Route 202 (Concord Pike) northbound near Rocky Run Parkway in Talleyville, New Castle County, through a fence and into a tree around 3:30 a.m. before bursting into flames on the side of the road, Delaware State Police and the Delaware Department of Transportation said.

Passersby tried to free the 19-year-old driver but couldn't due to the fire, police said. Medics pronounced the Pennsylvania teenager dead at the scene near Widener University School of Law and the Concord Mall.

DelDOT warned the road was closed at Silverside Road. One lane did appear to get by in the turning lane around 7 a.m. but DelDOT suggested drivers seek alternate routes through the end of the morning rush.

The road, however, was reopened just before 8 a.m.

The crash remained under investigation Monday. Police said it drugs and alcohol didn't appear to be factors in the crash.
