Crash Shuts Down Route 1 in Delaware

Medical helicopter dispatched to scene

A multi-vehicle accident forced the closure of Route 1 south of Route 299 in Middletown, Delaware for several hours Wednesday, state police said.

A 3-axel flat bed truck was traveling in the northbound lanes when the driver, 40-year-old Daniel Mullins, lost control and crossed into the southbound lanes. The truck crashed into a tractor trailer and a VW Jetta.

A medevac helicopter was called to the scene to rush Michael Danatzko, 38, the driver of the Jetta, to Christiana Hospital. He was last listed in critical condition.

Mullins is also being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Robert Mowbray, 49, driver of the tractor trailer, was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital Wednesday.

Mangled wreckage could be seen strewn across the highway as investigators tried to figure out the exactly what happened. They are not sure why the driver lost control of the truck.

The northbound lanes were reopened around 5:30 p.m., but the southbound lanes will remain closed until 7:00 a.m. Thursday, according to state police.
