Robbery Suspect Jumps From Platt Bridge

Man wanted for multiple robberies tells police he has "nothing to live for"

A robbery suspect ended a standoff with police by telling police he had "nothing to live for" and jumping to his death from the Platt Bridge Saturday morning.

Michael Dixon, 29, was wanted for several recent crimes, including swiping an Alex's Lemonade Stand donation jar from a Rita's Water Ice last week, according to police.

Philly cops spotted him driving around in a stolen SUV  4:45 a.m. Officers tried to stop him, but Dixon fled, leading police on a chase that ended on the bridge when Dixon hit a guardrail.

He got out of his car and stood on a ledge of the bridge for about four hours as officers tried to negotiate with him.

Dixon started to climb back to safety three times, but then jumped 20 feet into the Schuylkill river, according to Philly.com.

"We're not exactly sure if he jumped to escape into the water, but we are aware that where he landed was not a safe landing," according to Sgt. Andrew Aninsman. The jumper hit a concrete pier, according to KYW radio.

Within minutes, rescuers pulled him from the water and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Dixon, who was from Williamstown, Gloucester County, was wanted for multiple robberies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including the holdup of a Sovereign Bank in Bensalem, Pa. on Thursday and the Bucks County Rita's Water Ice Tuesday.

He had 29 previous arrests in New Jersey, according to the Inquirer.
