Rizzo Mulls Philadelphia Mayor Run

Former city councilman may switch parties to run

Former Philadelphia City Councilman Frank Rizzo says he's considering running for mayor as a Democrat in 2015.

The 70-year-old Rizzo was a Republican council member from 1996 until 2011, when he lost in the primary. He's the son of former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, who was the city's police commissioner before serving as mayor from 1972 to 1979. The elder Rizzo died in 1991.

The younger Rizzo tells The Philadelphia Inquirer he's currently registered as an independent, but plans to switch back to the Democratic Party soon.

He says he plans to explore the possibility of getting involved in the primary in 2015.

Democratic Mayor Michael Nutter is currently in his second term. Rizzo says he thinks Nutter has done a "great job."
