River Forces Vineland Residents to Evacuate

The National Guard helped Vineland residents evacuate their homes on Monday as the Maurice River continued to rise.

The evacuation comes nearly two days after Hurricane Irene touched down in North Carolina.

For some residents, this is the second time in a month that rising waters from the river forced them out of their homes.

A shelter has been set up at a local fire station.

The Maurice River crested at 7.72 feet at 5:30 p.m. and by 9:30 had dipped down to 7.61 feet, authorities said.

Upstream, waters from Willow Grove Lake have been surging across Willow Grove Road. Irene dumped 6 inches of rain on the area this weekend, which was hit with 10 inches of rain just two weeks ago.

Just to the south in Millville, the flood gates on Union Lake have been opened to keep the dam from breaking. The open gates are causing major flooding in that area as well.
