Rip Tides Prompt Increase in Del. Beach Rescues

Recent storms have caused dangerous conditions off area beaches

Rip tides caused by recent storms have kept Delaware lifeguards busy.

Fenwick Island Beach Patrol Capt. Tim Ferry says his guards made more than 40 water rescues during a three-day span in the 1.6-mile stretch of beach they cover.

Ferry says waves in the 3- to 5-foot range created rip currents that prompted guards to warn swimmers of dangerous conditions.

In nearby Ocean City, Beach Patrol Capt. Butch Arbin said in the past week, his guards have assisted about 600 swimmers in distress.
