Philly PD: Uniformed Occupier Won't Be Charged

Fraternal Order of Police could still bring action against retired cop who wore his uniform to Occupy Wall Street protests

Philadelphia Police say the retired captain who was arrested at an Occupy Wall Street demonstration won't face legal consequences for protesting in his old uniform.

Police spokesman Lt. Raymond Evers says Ray Lewis is entitled to exercise his First Amendment rights and will not be arrested for wearing his uniform at protests.

Lewis was arrested in November wearing his dress uniform near the New York Stock Exchange as he took part in protests over corporate greed and corruption.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey had sent Lewis a letter in November demanding he stop wearing his old uniform in public.

Lewis could still face consequences from the Fraternal Order of Police. The union tells The Philadelphia Inquirer he could be booted from its ranks and lose benefits.
