Rescued Jersey Sea Turtle Heads West

A loggerhead sea turtle rescued off New Jersey and cared for in South Carolina is heading to California.

The South Carolina Aquarium announced that the sea turtle named Jersey will be flying to California next week to its new home at the Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego.

The 80-pound turtle can never be returned to the wild because its rear flippers are damaged. It was missing part of one flipper and the other was essentially paralyzed.

Jersey was found in September of last year at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Forked River, New Jersey.

The turtle will be flown to California on Nov. 19.
