Report: University of Pennsylvania Graduate Student Becomes 12th Suicide in Four Years

An engineering graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania killed himself Monday, becoming the 12th student to commit suicide at the Ivy League school since 2013, according to a report by the Daily Pennsylvanian.

Alfredo Abravanel, 22, a native of Athens, Greece, died "unexpectedly" Monday, according to an email sent from the dean of Penn's Engineering Department.

"News like this always saddens us, but the loss of a young life with so much promise is especially devastating," Dean Vijay Kumar wrote Tuesday to students. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Alfredo’s family and friends."

The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's student newspaper, reported Abravanel is the 12th suicide within the student body since Feb. 2013.

Recent deaths include Amanda Hu, who was found dead inside her apartment Sept. 28, 2014, and Madison Holleran, a former New Jersey track star who died in January of that year.

City officials did not respond to messages left about whether Abravanel killed himself at a Philadelphia gun club Monday afternoon. An initial police report indicated a 22-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head at 2:15 p.m. at the Philadelphia Archery and Gun Club in South Philadelphia.
