Freight Train Strikes, Kills Teen Cyclist

Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say a slow-moving freight train struck and killed a cyclist.

Police in Reading said the victim was riding near the tracks Wednesday afternoon when his bike somehow got caught underneath the train.

The Reading Eagle reported emergency crews were called to the scene just after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Berks County coroner's office pronounced 18-year-old Jaylan Rodriguez dead at the scene less than an hour later.

Rodriguez’s family was left searching for answers.

"I just want to find out what happened," Laly Collazo told the Reading Eagles. "That's my son. I can't believe this happened."

Norfolk Southern officials directed questions to police but said the train had been stopped and apparently had just started moving at the time of the accident.

Spokesman Dave Pidgeon said the freight train had come from Allentown and was heading west toward Conway, Beaver County.
