"Sometimes we get caught up thinking that football is life. Then something happens that reminds us it's just a game. Today is that day," tweeted Julian Vandervelde, Eagles offensive lineman.
After Eagles GM Howie Roseman took the podium to announce Garrett's death, the news spread like wildfire on social media.
"We are deeply saddened by the news about Garrett Reid. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy, Tammy and their family. We will support them and the Eagles in any way we can through this difficult time," tweeted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
In a statement, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter also offered condolences on the passing of Garrett:
โOur deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Andy and Tammy Reid during this tragic time. Losing a son or daughter is a parentโs worst nightmare, and Garrett Reidโs passing is a terrible loss,โ said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. โFor more than a decade Andy Reid has personified hard work and athletic excellence. He is an enduring and significant part of our city and sports culture, and weโve experienced with him the ups and downs of the Eagles. And now, in this moment of great suffering, we all join together in sending our condolences to the Reids, who have given so much to the Philadelphia region.โ
