Raymond's Quest for Olympic Gold Continues

Wayne, Pa. native along with partner Mike Bryan advances to Mixed Doubles semifinals

Just hours after her quest for an elusive Olympic gold medal ended in Women’s Doubles, Wayne, Pa.’s Lisa Raymond’s journey for gold continued in Mixed Doubles.

Raymond and partner Mike Bryan downed Argentinians Juan Martin del Potro and Gisela Dulko 6-2, 7-5 in a match that lasted just about an hour.

Raymond, who turns 39 next week, and Bryan, who is 34, defeated two players more than a combined two decades younger in Dulko, 27, and del Potro, 23.

What could have helped Raymond and Bryan is that del Potro came into the matching having just lost to Roger Federer in the longest tennis match in Olympics history, an epic 4 hour, 26 minute marathon.

Raymond and Bryan had more aces (4 to 2), fewer unforced errors (11 to 16) and nearly twice as many winners (26 to 14) than their Argentina counterparts.

Raymond, an 11-time Grand Slam winner who says that Olympic gold is the only thing missing from her trophy case, and Bryan will play the winner of Belarus and India. If they win that match they will play for the gold medal. The duo of Raymond/Bryan already won a Grand Slam Mixed Doubles title at Wimbledon this summer.
