South Jersey Rabbi Fred Neulander to Remain Behind Bars in Murder-for-Hire Plot

Court won't hear appeal of rabbi after wife beaten to death

New Jersey's highest court won't hear an appeal from a rabbi convicted of plotting the 1994 murder-for-hire of his wife at their home.

The state Supreme Court announced its decision Tuesday. That means a state appellate court decision that rejected Fred Neulander's bid to overturn his conviction will stand.

The 75-year-old Neulander is serving a life sentence for the beating death his 52-year-old wife, Carol Neulander. His lawyer has argued there were errors at his trial and he was denied effective counsel.

Two hired killers testified they beat Carol Neulander to death on orders from her husband. One said Fred Neulander wanted his wife dead so he could carry on an affair.

Both killers have finished their prison sentences.

Neulander won't be eligible for parole until he's nearly 90.
