Public Invited to School Budget Hearing

School closings, layoffs, program cuts are being considered

The first of a series of Philadelphia school budget public hearings is being held on Tuesday.

The meeting comes on the heels of the release of a reorganization plan that would close 40 schools by next year and another two dozen in the next five years. School officials are expected to reveal which schools would be affected later this summer.

The School Reform Commission is planning to hold meetings across the city throughout May to allow public review of its budget proposals.

The 2012-13 budget proposal is a $2.5 billion spending plan that anticipates a gap of $218 million that would probably be closed by borrowing money. The budget also calls for union employee cooperation in the form of contract givebacks.
