Public Housing Residents Evacuate Building

Residents of a public housing building in Atlantic City had to deal with the bitter cold on Monday.

120 people were forced to evacuate the Charles P. Jeffries Towers on North Vermont Avenue due to electrical problems in the building.

Fifty of the people evacuated are residents with special needs.

“People here on oxygen, people with bad lungs, people in wheelchairs, I feel sorry for them,” said resident Allen Thomas.

The stranded residents were taken by bus to two different shelters set up by the local Red Cross.

Several crews are currently making repairs and hope to have the building fixed by midday Tuesday.

“We’re going to try to get the people back in here sometime tomorrow, hopefully around noon,” said Tom Foley of Atlantic City Emergency Management.
